Leominster man dies in Fitchburg crash
FITCHBURG -- A 31-year-old Leominster man died in a two-car crash on Airport Road early Sunday morning, according to police. Officer Paul M. McNamara identified the victim as Carlos Viera of 740 Central St., Leominster. McNamara said Viera left a party on Water Street and was intoxicated at the time of the crash, which happened near the airport around 12:30 a.m. "He was at a private house party for the Patriots game," McNamara said during an interview Sunday night. "Speed and alcohol were a factor." Viera was driving his friend's 1996 Dodge Intrepid and struck a woman head on. McNamara identified the second driver as Bahati Petro Geliga, 45, of Fitchburg. Deputy Fire Chief Gary Testagrossa said Geliga was taken to the hospital with a leg injury. The road conditions were snowy and icy at the time of the wreck, according to Testagrossa. Firefighters used the Jaws of Life to extricate Viera, but they were unable to figure out who he was because he didn't have any identification on him, and he was unconscious at the time, Testagrossa said. The fire department originally called in a Lifeflight helicopter from Worcester, but the copter couldn't fly because of the weather, Testagrossa said. Police plan to release more information about the crash today. |
